The State Of The Jamaican Movie Industry
The problem with the Jamaican movie industry is that there is no movie industry. Jamaican people over the years do not value the arts and only a few of the uptowners who are in the know. For years in Jamaica, the ghetto mentality have been the ones promoting most of the visual arts coming out of Jamaica. No fault of their own, the people who could afford to finiance and make low budget films and stage plays have been telling it their way. So let us look at a drug lord who has the money to splash around. He is going to become the executive director/producer and the story he is going to tell is the story about his world, yes drugs and guns. This is still creative stuff to him. To the more intellectuals it's a pile of crap.
GUNS AND DRUGS
Jamaica has been tarnished with a brush of negativity. The only thing to come out of Jamaicam movies over the years is how to kill each other and do drug deals at home and abroad. Also how to bamdooloo your way through the visa system to get to US or UK or any other rich country so to speak. Jamaica is a such a beautiful and vibes in your face Island, so why is there no movies showing our natural everyday vibes?
I often ask myself, why is there no Jamaican movies about everyday family life? films about Jamaicans achievements both personal and in the ligitimate business world. Films about love and personal struggles, and yes, not forgetting the good old adventure stories of maybe a hero saving someone from doom?
The truth is....if you put a camera in the hands of a drug dealer, he will more than likely want people to know about his world and what takes place in there, there nothing wrong with this, but we need to start placing the camera into other people's world and get a mixup and blend. And talking of "Mixup and Blend" the same boring stuff was going on in Jamaican broadcasting for years, same old politics chat, intecllectuals giving us verbal diahorrea, until Ragga Shanti came along and blew all presenters out the water with vibes and natural mystics on the street, guarrilla style radio presenting. The same has to happen to Jamaican movies...Junior Hart is that person who is doing just that. Collywood Films is that breath of fresh air to the Jamaican movie industry.
jamaican movies needs fresh minds and a fresh approach. At the moment the industry lacks vision and talent. The movement must start from grass roots, the performing arts students. For years colleges like the Edna Manley have been turning out great talent, unfortunatly after graduates leave performing art college, there is nowhere for that talent to go, so in most cases it dies. Times are now changing for the better. Jamaica will rise up and it's movie industry is becoming like the pheonix. From out of the ashes a great bird shall rise and fly away.
